Getting Unstuck: Freeing Yourself from the Grip of Functional Freeze
After working with hundreds of people over the last few years, I’ve noticed that functional freeze is bit of an epidemic.
Functional freeze is a nervous system experience that occurs when we are in fight, flight, and collapse simultaneously, with little access to the ventral vagal (safety) branch of our nervous system. What this looks like in our day-to-day experience is a constant sense of overwhelm, like you can’t possibly take on more, AND a constant sense of urgency to do more anyway. Anyone relate?
The pressures and pain of what we’re moving through, both personally and collectively, can simply feel like too much for our systems to handle…and yet, we still have to show up to our lives. So we often override what we feel or need in favor of ‘pushing through’. In doing this we perpetuate disconnection from our soma, and while we may be performing our responsibilities, inside we may feel stuck, numb, avoidant and overwhelmed.
Here are some signs you might be stuck in functional freeze:
you’re going through the motions of your day-to-day responsibilities, but inside you feel stuck, overwhelmed, numb, or disconnected
you experience chronic muscle tension and a constant sense of bracing for the next catastrophe
you struggle to make decisions, big or small, and often get caught spinning in analysis paralysis
you often suppress big feelings, struggle to identify them, and live in a constant low-level state of anxiety
you struggle to concentrate, feel creative or inspired, or come up with solutions for your problems
people always seem to think you’re fine because you’re ‘so together’ but on the inside you feel numb or like everything is falling apart
having nourishing and meaningful social interactions typically feels really difficult
that sense of being ‘tired but wired’
