What IS Somatics?

✨Somatics✨ is a trendy word these days and yet I often find that folks have only a vague sense of what it means. This makes so much sense because people are often using it to talk about anything that has to do with the body…and there are a thousand and one ways to work with the territory of our soma, so it can all feel a bit confusing.

For those who don’t know: ✨somatics✨  is derived from the greek root ‘soma’ which means ‘the living body in it’s wholeness’ or ‘the living body known from within.’

In the somatic lineages I have been so blessed to learn from and live by, I have come to understand (and facilitate) somatics through a particular lens:

🪻 Somatics can be understood as a *process of change* that helps us heal our nervous system and create the inner space to live into our desires and values — in my somatic lineage, if we’re talkin somatics, we’re talkin nervous system baby!

🪻 Somatics can be understood as a *practice* through which we cultivate the necessary skills required to live into new embodied ways of being — this can look MANY ways, and somatics says that we are always practicing SOMETHING…so the questions become: IS what I am practicing helping move me TOWARDS aliveness, or away from it? TOWARDS what I value, or away from it? Somatics as a practice lets us cultivate the skills to move TOWARDS LIFE.

🪻 Somatics can be understood as a *paradigm* that invites us to live a life of conscious embodiment, guided by our felt experience — this one is key because it helps us understand that somatics isn’t just a formal practice that I do for a specific amount of time in my day…it’s a way of BEING from moment-to-moment.
